Betty Jean Harvey Brown, age 81, of Michigan, parted this life on Saturday, January 31, 2026. She was born on November 11, 1944, in Reed City, Michigan, to Walter J. Jones, Sr. and Clara M. Haywood.
Betty lived a life rooted in service. This devotion to helping others led her to become an educator in Muskegon County, where she served faithfully for many years. Her compassion, kindness, and service to others was unmatched. She was always willing to help, especially those who were less fortunate or in need. Often giving of herself without expecting anything in return. Though she may not have had much, she shared whatever she could, whether through her time, support, or a helping hand. She was dependable, a woman of her word, and someone her family and friends could always count on.
She was respectful toward everyone she encountered, especially her elders, and was known for her giving spirit. Her generosity was shown in many ways, including providing rides to church, grocery shopping for others, assisting elderly friends with health challenges, helping her grandchildren with chores, or simply being a listening ear. Her nurturing spirit extended deeply within her family, especially in the special bond she shared with her nieces, and nephews.
Betty was an exceptional cook and baker, well known for her delicious meals, cookies, and cakes. Especially during the holidays, when her home was filled with warmth and abundance. She also enjoyed playing board games, particularly Scrabble and Boggle, where her competitive side often shined. Both adults and children treasured those moments and always looked forward to the next game.
Her faith was an important part of her life. She deeply loved her church and faithfully sang in the choir. Betty also faced a courageous 12-year journey with Alzheimer’s, during which she remained surrounded by love and care.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, and by her youngest daughter, Lana K. Harvey.
She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Chrisanna L. Harvey and Avis M. Lane, both of Muskegon; one son, Jerome (Toshia) Betts; six grandchildren, Christopher, Christine, Xavier, Javen, Ciera, and Brandon; thirteen great-grandchildren; one sibling, Roland (Marsha) Jones of Muskegon; a host of nieces and nephews; her longtime friend Evette Tripp; and many other relatives and friends.
