Dorothy Lucas Life Story

Dorothy Mae Lucas, affectionately known as “Dot,” age 83, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, entered eternal rest on May 9, 2026. She was called home to be with the Lord, whom she loved and faithfully served. Dorothy was born on January 8, 1943, in Abbeville, South Carolina, to her loving parents, Govenor Manning and Christine Lee. From an early age, she was grounded in faith, family, and community. With a compassionate heart, unwavering faith, and a spirit devoted to serving others.

At a young age, Dorothy’s family relocated to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she completed her early education and attended South High School. Following high school, Dorothy married the love of her life, Kenny Lucas. She built a life rooted in faith, family, and community. Dorothy proudly worked for several years as a teacher’s aide, where she found joy in encouraging and caring for children. She also faithfully served for many years working the voter polls within her community.

Dorothy’s greatest passion was her faith and service to God. She attended Davis Chapel, where she devoted herself to Christian education and Sunday school teaching. She had a remarkable knowledge of scripture and could recall Bible verses effortlessly. Whether teaching, encouraging, or simply sharing a conversation, Dorothy always found a way to pour wisdom and love into others.

Dorothy loved cooking, attending church, and spending meaningful time with family and friends. She was known for her warm and hospitable spirit, often visiting those who were sick or shut in to offer comfort, prayer, and companionship. Her compassionate heart and caring nature touched countless lives. California also held a special place in Dorothy’s heart. She loved living there and always looked forward to visiting whenever she returned to Grand Rapids, as it brought her a sense of peace, joy, and comfort.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kenny Lucas; her daughter; Kristen Yolas, her siblings; Joe Lee, Manning Lee, Julia King, Evelyn Moore, Mary Curry, Virginia Hunt, and Geraldine Hamilton.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory her loving siblings; Calvin Lee, and Jeanette McCoy; her cherished grandchildren, Jasmine Ariana Yolas, Miya Lee Braynen, and Israel Lee Braynen; her dear son-in-law, Mark Yolas; her beloved brother-in-law, Casion Hunt; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and treasured friends who loved her dearly.

Dorothy’s life was a beautiful reflection of faith, compassion, hospitality, and love. Though she will be deeply missed, her memory and the many lives she touched will continue to live on for generations to come.
