Life Story

Mary Louise Smith, aged 82, passed away unexpectedly on February 11, 2022. A life-long resident of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Mary Louise, fondly known as Mary Lou, was the daughter of the late Dorothy Maxwell Smith and Pierson Smith. Mary Lou was a proud graduate of South High School and a graduate of Aquinas College. As a Grand Rapids Public School teacher, Mary Lou taught kindergarten for nearly forty years at Madison Park Elementary School.

Mary Lou's true passion was for the arts. She was the consummate performer. Mary Lou was a singer, dancer, and actress.  She was a devoted member of the local theatre community. For many years, she was the musical accompanist for Grand Rapids Civic Theater productions. Mary Lou was both a volunteer with the Grand Rapids Symphony and a member of the Symphony Choir.

Mary Lou was an active member of Fountain Street Church, an advocate of the arts, women's rights, diversity and inclusion, and she supported these causes and was vocal about them. Mary Lou loved to travel and New York was a favorite destination. She was an avid reader and bibliophile. She left an indelible mark on many lives especially on those who knew her.

She is survived by her brother, Paul Smith of Grand Rapids; his daughters, Michele Smith of Grand Rapids, MI, Ruth (Mark Kuyers) of West Olive, MI, and Simone (Mike) Politz of Big Rapids, MI; four great-nieces, many cousins and a host of friends.
